Comment and divide yourselves as appropriate.
Do you hold your vehicles long term or swap out regularly?
6 years is the dividing line. More than six is buy and hold. Less than that are seat swappers.
I can’t make a poll. That seems difficult, I’m too lazy, and I’m looking at a new truck tonight.

I buy and hold. Shortest current tenured vehicle is 2 years, Taco is a 2016 . After that it is 4 years for the bike, 8 years for the Saab and I made 10+ with the Mustang.

I had my 2006 Mazda6 V6 for a year and a half (wedding gift in 2013) then traded it on my ST.
I’ve had my truck since 2006 (first car) and my Fiesta ST , CX-3 and Forte all bought in the last 3 years. The ST and Forte new, the CX-3 was a 1 year old CPO.

4 years is my magic number. After year 4 I start getting itchy and it won’t take long to trade out.

I’ve never held longer than 6. I’m a bit of a holder, but not that long. Life is too short to drive so few cars ;)
Also I crashed one and holding onto it wasn’t viable

I’m a buy and hold.
Mazda3, bought in 2009 still have and drive
Outback: bought in 2012 sill have and drive
Isuzu PU: bought in 1996 still have and drive

Swap. I’ve never owned a vehicle longer than 4 years. The Taco will most likely be the first to pass that threshold.

I have 3 cars. Bought one of them new in June 2000, one new in March 2006, and the other one just a few months ago.
Yeah, I’d say I’m a buy and hold guy...

I’m pretty much changing cars on a yearly basis as I get bored of them (usually due to an annoying fault)

Lately I’m in the h old camp. But I’ve had some for only a few years. 17 years being the ongoing longest, although it’s been parked more than driven.

it depends on what you consider “holding” i have a bunch of project cars that are long term projects. those are holds. but i have probably about 4 or 5 donor cars for every one of THEM, that i have taken what i needed, and sold off, harvested, and scrapped the rest........ those dont stick around more than about a month.........

I’ve been a seat swapper, but I’m almost at 6 years with the Legacy GT and the itch is real strong for a fun new mountain bike hauler. Shortest hold was less than a year with a Saturn, no surprise there.
I’ll probably have the C5Z for another year or two.

long term, shortest has been 6 years

Shit I’ve only been old enough to drive for 7(almost 8 years) anddd currently on vehicles #5 and #6 so that tells you that . But high school, college and the start of real life are very transitional times as far as what I need out of a vehicle and the amount of money I have to spend on them so I see this changing.
My plan is to have a long-term reliable vehicle (my Tacoma) and a second old/weird/fun/unreliable whatever car that I buy and have my fun with and sell if and when I’m ready to move on(currently, a Range Rover Classic) .

What about buying vehicles that probably aren’t worth keeping by 6 years?
With motorcycles I was swapping every year or two
With cars I would say I buy and hold the daily driver and tend to want to swap anything else

I hold mine until they are no longer financially feasible to repair. I bought my 2002 Impreza wagon with 111,000kms on it and had it from 2008 until 2013 when it had 180,000kms
(rear subframe rusted out...stupid Canadian winters...).
So far, I’ve had my 2009 Accent (bought with 54,000kms) from April 2013 until now and it’s about at 147,000kms. Last time I had work done to it, they checked and it had no rust anywhere (I undercoat yearly) except for some surface rust just before the rear wheel wells underneath, which I promptly had removed and repainted. Hoping to get many years out of her yet!

So far seat swap although not entirely by choice. I had a 2005 Corolla for almost 3 years before it was totaled in April and now have a 2011 Camry for probably the next 4 years. I had no intentions of getting rid of the Corolla which was paid off and super reliable but fate had other plans. In 4 years I’ll have it payed off and should be set up with my post college career (hopefully) at which point it will probably have close to 200,000 miles and I’ll be looking for something newer and nicer. Although I don’t like car shopping and buying (lot of anxiety once it’s real and sometimes even when I’m just looking for fun) and love having the car payed off and get attached over time so maybe I’ll just hold onto it until it gets too expensive to keep going, which could be a while as it’s a Camry.

my parents are definetly long term holders.
me on the other hand....I think i’ve had like 25+ bikes in my 7 years of riding...(flips) but I’ve kept my SV and my BMW for
the longest. (about 5 years each)

Well, here is the list of vehicles I have owned since getting my license ~20 years ago. The past 10 cars have been rotated through over the past 4 years. The Pacifica stopped the churn and is currently our only car.

If 6 years is the line, I’m a seat swapper. I owned my E34 5-series and my E46 M3 for 4-5 years each, and will probably own my C63 for about the same duration. I owned my Land Cruiser for 3-plus years, and the only reason I’ll own my 4Runner for less than that is that I’ll probably replace it with a lower-mileage twin. My SQ5, E46 330ci, and Acura Vigor were briefer stopgaps when I was ready to move on from a previous vehicle for one reason or another but hadn’t figured out the perfect long-term replacement.
The one exception is that if my first car hadn’t been totaled in an accident I’d probably still have it, or least have owned it for about 10 years.

Hold until it craps out finally, and if it can’t be fixed, then hopefully there’s enough money in the bank to buy another soulless rolling box of plastic and steel that’ll last long enough to buy yet another rolling box of plastic and steel with slightly more soul.

I swap regularly, the longest I’ve held onto a car is 4 years. Part of it is that I just haven’t found something I’ve wanted to keep for longer, part of it is space constraints that keep me from having too many cars at once.

The only reason we still have the Isuzu is it is worth nothing and still works, and costs like $75/year to insure.

Buy and hold. I’ve had my DD for around 10 years, my Camaro forever and my would still have the car we bought for her in 2011 if it hadn’t been totaled. I wish I could switch them out more often but my innate financial attitude won’t allow it.

I’m tee tering on buy and hold. It’s certainly the plan at least…
First cars were family cars that I don’t exactly count.
early 90's f150: Farm truck that I occasionally drove for a year until the parents sold it
2000 Dodge Grand Caravan: Hand me down from the parents that died at around 300k miles and ~ 3 years of me driving it.
1999 Legacy 2.5gt Wagon: Binned it in to a ditch and tree after over 5 years of ownership at around 250k miles
2003 WRX Wagon: Current Car that I have had for just shy of 6 years. 210k on chassis and roughly 85k on engine after a cam gear exploded and grenaded everything

That’s pretty much the same story as my Pathfinder (bought in ‘06). I would actually like to dump it, but my wife thinks it’s useful.
Which it is, for about 5 trips to Home Depot a year.

I tend to hold on to my car’s these days, but that wasn’t always the case. The Benz and Porsche didn’t stay long due to a dramatic drop in income (6-figures to a year and a half of unemployment will make you re-evaluate your priorities... ) The E34 stayed around for years, mostly because it was paid off.
I don’t want to deal with car payments again, and I’ve found my perfect car, so I have little reason to swap it out. If someone comes up with another cheap, fun to drive mini-minivan with a manual transmission available new in the US I just might be tempted to buy, but I’m not going to hold my breath that this will ever happen and so I’ll just hang on to what I’ve got. I’m only driving about 4,000 miles per year, so I expect t his bugger to last for decades.

I’m kind of both. I tend to have 1 I hold, 1 I swap, for each wheel delineation. I’ve got a van I’ve had for 8 years, but the wife’s Audi has been here 18 months and will probably be gone in the Spring.
My gasser bike I’ve had 15 years, the zero is 2 years old.
I think as time passes I'm shifting more towards holding.

6 years? I thought that 4 years was the line. I must’ve stopped paying attention a while back because looking it up again now, the average ownershi p length appears to be 79 months. So I guess 6 years isn’t far from the truth after all.
It’s been my goal to keep my cars longer than average, but I guess I better step up my game. The only car that I’ve had for more than 6 years is my current Mustang (9 years and cou nt ing). I’ve only had my truck for a couple of years so far, and the car that I had before it was mine for about 5 years.

1. 2004
Volvo S40(2011-2014)
-
first car, hand me down from parents
. I drove it junior and senior year of high school and my parents let me keep it around in the garage my freshman year of college for when I was home, mostly because I had jobs and stuff on breaks and they both need their cars. Also our insurance can be turned on and off by month with no rate impact so it literally cost
nothing sitting in the garage while I’m away.
2. 1998 BMW 318ti(2014-2018) - Convinced my parents to let me sell the Volvo and buy something else(was desperate for a third pedal and wanted to get my hands dirty a bit mechanically) with a little of my money and some what we got from the Volvo. They didn’t care as long as it had airbags.
3. 1992 Alfa Romeo 164 (2016) - Summer project, bought it in May not running for $600, sold it in August running and driving for $1200. It looks like I turned a profit, but my spreadsheet for parts and very specific tools I doubt I’ll ever use again says it cost me $1400 total. Still, $200 to learn a lot and have an Alfa for a summer was worth it.
4. 1991 Toyota 4Runner(2016-2018) - Bought it to drive across the country for my last year at school(Oregon-Pennsylvania) with some summer internship money. Despite only having it for about third as long as the BMW and selling it at the same time , I put 3 times as many miles on it and made a ton of memories.
5. 2018 Tacoma (2017(December, so it was an 18 model year )-present)-Needed an adult car for a long commute for a very good starting job with a long commute in a city I knew zero people , wanted 4 wheel drive and something I could see keeping for forever. Used Tacomas, especially 4wd and stick hold crazy value so ended up buying new. My dad was willing to make me a loan which I’m well on my way to being done with.
6. 1990 Range Rover (August 2018 - present) - Love my Tacoma but missed old cars, missed wrenching and was taking my Tacoma off road more than I wanted to with a new truck. Also, always loved old school Rovers and they are incredibly cheap and good fun if you don’t need to rely on it.

Though that also was my record for high school and college, but I fully admit they’re rookie numbers in this business. Though two of those 6 I still have. Wait, no, 7, 3 of the 3 I still have, I forgot one I bought on year 8.

What’s funny is I end up comparing myself to people on here and other friends who are into cars as a hobby so I don’t usually think of myself as having had an unusual amount of cars until I realize I’ve only owned one less car in my lifetime at the age of 23 than my dad has going on 60.
![]() 10/24/2018 at 21:45 |

I was going to object to that but thinking about it if my idea of a purely for-fun car with a >$1000 budget is an old Alfa Romeo and with a >$3000 budget is an old Land Rover god knows what I’ll get myself into if I give myself a bigger budget for a toy/project
